2010 is the winning year for the West

The Prairie Provinces and Territories had broken previous records for lottery windfall of $1 million and more in 2010. 2010 would go down as the year with 53 prizes of a million dollars and more won by players in the region. Interestingly, a total of more than a quarter of a billion went to the region.

The years 1993 and 2009 held the previous records for the biggest number of million-dollar-prizes in a single calendar year. In 1993, 29 tickets won lottery prizes worth a million or more each, totaling $60,895,308. In 2009, there were 26-million-dollar-plus prizes, totaling $239,169,483.

For the year 2010, the total win was a staggering $260,440,742.90!

There were millionaires in all the provinces in the West, such as Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. The North had created millionaires too with two $1 million winners in the Northwest Territories.

In so far as the lottery win is concerned, most winners told they needed more time to think about what to do with their windfall. Majority of the newly created millionaires said that the windfall won’t change their life as it just makes life a bit easier for them.

The most common plans of winners include the following below:

  • ·         Share the luck with family and friends
  • ·         Pay off bills and loans
  • ·         Purchase new vehicles
  • ·         Travel

Others told that they would share some of their money with charitable institutions.

Here are some notable stories of lottery winners for 2010 in the West.

“Of course you dream – going on trips all over the world, buying cars, living the life you dream of. But now I know that I won’t do that. It’s not who I am. I just want to make sure my life will stay as normal as it can. Sure, I could take the $41 Million and get lost in Mexico or some place and live the dream, but is that the purpose? I don’t think that’s what it’s all about.”

“I promised to take my wife to Hawaii when we got married, and we never did make it, so maybe we’ll go now.”

The couple has been playing the lottery for 20 years now with no much luck.

Jo Ann said that the windfall is like a dream.

"I had to stop at the corner store on the way into Hawkesbury and I put the ticket in the checker, like I do every Saturday when I buy my 6/49 and I check my Max. So I put it in and it says 50, 000,” she said.

"I'm going, 'Good, now I get rid of that ugly bathroom and new cupboards in my kitchen.'"

Jo Ann said she and her husband had missed some zeroes on their first reading. They did not know that they won $50 million at first.

"It's like living a dream. You just hope nobody wakes you up," added Jo Ann.

She and her husband managed a convenience store in Hawkesbury called Jo’s Depanneur for 12 years before they decided to sell it. They now manage a hobby shop that sells hockey cards and jerseys.

Lotto officials have confirmed that there was indeed a winning ticket validated by a couple in the Ottawa Region.

Lottery officials at OLG said, however, that they would only reveal where the ticket was bought or any information on the lottery winners until the ticket is confirmed.

The couple is expected to claim their prize later this week, told OLG spokesman Tony Bitonti.
Jo Ann said they plan to claim the prize on Wednesday morning.

The couple defied the odds of one in 28,633,528 to win the jackpot prize in Lotto Max.

There were also four tickets from the December 30 draw that won a $1 million Maxmillions prizes. One was purchased in Toronto and the others were sold in Western Canada.
